The Bridge School

Self-Determination Program

Why We Started

To provide a structured intervention to support students in :

  • Setting realistic goals
  • Learning the steps to take to attain those goals in a systematic way

We were observing that our middle school students needed something more than what we were already providing. We decided to create a program for these students that would be more explicit in teaching them the kinds of skills they were missing. The literature tells us that:

Young adults with disabilities who left school more self-determined, were more likely to live independently, be employed and earn higher wages.

People who use AAC who reported highest levels of self-determination also reported the highest quality of life.
