Expanding self-knowledge: Students identify what’s important to them and why.

FAF is a tool that was developed to help guide the individual, the family and team in looking at the young adult’s priorities in life and assist with the development of appropriate plans for transition.

FAF is a self-discovery survey of 65 items. The survey is organized around seven major life areas: Community Membership; Control of Personal Health and Welfare; Pursuit of Lifelong Learning; Developing Talents and Interests; Creating Healthy Relationships; Self-Reliance; and Developing a Personal Sense of Spirituality.

There are four stages in the application of the tool:

  1. The first stage assists the students in determining what is important to them.
  2. The second stage assists the student in determining how satisfied he/she is with the benchmarks deemed to be important or very important.
  3. The third stage assists the student in establishing critical priorities in areas in which the student has expressed an interest in developing more skill and confidence.
  4. The final stage assists students in determining what steps need to be taken to address these priorities.
